5-Minute Primer

ARK: Survival Evolved drops you naked, freezing, and starving on a mysterious island populated by prehistoric creatures and hostile players. There are no tutorials, no quest markers, and absolutely no hand-holding. Your only objective is to survive by any means necessary. You will tame dinosaurs, build sprawling bases, craft advanced technology, and eventually confront the game's massive boss creatures. However, the first few days are a brutal test of patience and basic problem-solving. If you can master the art of not dying to the environment within your first hour, you have already surpassed thousands of failed survivors.

The core gameplay loop revolves around three pillars: Harvesting (punching trees and picking berries), Crafting (turning those raw materials into tools and shelter), and Taming (using those tools to knock out and befriend the island's wildlife). Everything you do earns you Experience Points (XP), which levels up your character and unlocks Engrams—the blueprints needed to craft new items. To progress, you must constantly weigh the risk of exploring dangerous new territories against the reward of acquiring better resources and taming stronger mounts. The game is a marathon, not a sprint, and pacing yourself is the ultimate secret to success.

First Hour Checklist

The moments immediately following your spawn dictate whether you live to see the next sunrise or become a Dodo's breakfast. Follow this checklist in exact order to secure your immediate survival.

  • Spawn Strategically: When you first drop into the game, walk along the beach before fully committing to a location. Look for a spot with abundant trees, bushes, and rocks, but ensure it is far enough away from the treeline to give you a clear line of sight for approaching predators. The south-eastern beaches of The Island are widely considered the safest starting zones.
  • Punch Trees (Carefully):strong> Walk up to a tree and punch it by clicking your left mouse button. Harvest about 10 to 15 pieces of thatch. Critical warning: watch your health bar. In ARK, punching trees damages you. Stop immediately when you reach about 20 health. Do not die to a tree.
  • Learn the Pickaxe: Open your inventory, click the "Craftables" tab, and craft a Stone Pick. Equip it. From now on, use the pickaxe on trees for thatch and on rocks for flint. Never punch trees again.
  • Forage for Fiber and Food: Walk through the tall grass near the beach and press "E" repeatedly to harvest fiber. You will need about 50 fiber. While doing this, walk up to bushes and press "E" to pick berries. Keep an eye out for Mejoberries (pinkish-purple) and Amarberries (blue). These are your primary food sources and future taming aids.
  • Craft a Stone Hatchet: The hatchet is the most important early tool. Unlike the pickaxe, when you use the hatchet on a tree, it yields wood instead of thatch. When used on a dead animal, it yields meat instead of hide. Always use the hatchet for bulk wood harvesting.
  • Get a Campfire Going: Collect 12 stones, 20 wood, and 10 thatch. Craft a campfire. Place it down, fill it with wood, and light it. Drop any raw meat you have into the campfire to cook it. Eating raw meat will drastically lower your health. Cooked meat restores hunger and provides much better healing.
  • Build a Thatch Hut: Craft a foundation, four walls, a doorframe, a door, and a roof. Place them down to create a small 1x1 shack. Place your bed roll inside and your campfire just outside the door. You now have a secure respawn point.

Key Systems Explained

The Engram System

Every time you level up, you receive Engram Points (EP). You spend these points in your inventory to learn how to craft specific items. You cannot craft an item unless you have first spent EP to learn its Engram. Furthermore, you can only learn Engrams at or below your current level. If you reach level 10 and accidentally skip learning the Spear Engram, you can never go back and learn it unless you use a rare "Mindwipe Tonic" to reset your entire character. Plan your Engram purchases carefully. In the early game, focus entirely on survival tools, clothing, and basic shelter. Do not waste EP on cosmetic items or weapons you won't immediately use.

Survival Stats

Your character has six main stats, and understanding how they interact with the environment is non-negotiable.

  • Health: Your life force. Replenished slowly by eating, or quickly by using specific items.
  • Stamina: Depletes when you sprint, attack, or harvest. If it hits zero, you will move at a crawl and be unable to fight or run.
  • Oxygen: Only matters underwater. Depletes quickly when diving; replenishes on the surface. Put a few points here early if you plan on coastal exploration.
  • Food: Depletes over time. If it reaches zero, you will begin to starve, rapidly draining your health.
  • Water: Depletes much faster than food, especially in hot climates or when sprinting. Consume water from water sources by walking into a river or pond, placing your crosshair on the water, and pressing "E". You cannot carry water in early game without a Waterskin.
  • Weight: Dictates your maximum carrying capacity. Every resource has a weight value. If you exceed your weight limit, you become encumbered and cannot move until you drop items.
  • Temperature: Displayed as a small icon near your stats. If you are too hot or too cold, your health and stamina drain rapidly. Stand near a fire to warm up, or stand in water to cool down.

The Taming Mechanic

Taming is the heart of ARK. The process differs slightly between passive and knockout tames, but early game dinosaurs are exclusively knockout tames. To tame a creature, you must first render it unconscious. This is done by shooting it with a slingshot, hitting it with a club, or using tranquilizer arrows later on. Once the animal is down, you access its inventory by pressing "E" and place food—usually Narcoberries or Raw Meat—into its slots. The creature will passively eat the food, which raises its "Taming Bar." Meanwhile, an "Unconsciousness" bar will slowly drain. You must continually feed it Narcoberries to keep it asleep. If the creature wakes up before the taming bar reaches 100%, the taming fails, and you lose all the food you put in its inventory.

Build / Character Choices

Attribute Point Allocation

Every level grants you a stat point to put into one of your character's attributes. Your choices here will permanently shape your early game experience until you can craft gear to compensate for your weaknesses. You receive zero stat points at level 1, but gain them from level 2 onward.

  • Weight (Recommended 1st Priority): Put your first 10 to 15 points exclusively into Weight. ARK is a game of resource hoarding. Being able to carry 50 extra pieces of wood or 30 extra stones means you make significantly fewer trips back to your base. High weight capacity is the single most important quality-of-life investment for a new player.
  • Health (Recommended 2nd Priority): After weight, dump points into Health. The environment is lethal, and dinosaurs hit incredibly hard. Having a large health pool gives you a margin of error to escape bad situations.
  • Stamina (Recommended 3rd Priority): You need stamina to run away from predators and harvest resources. Around 150 to 200 base stamina is sufficient for early exploration.
  • Stats to Ignore Early On: Do not put points into Melee Damage or Movement Speed. Melee damage scales poorly for players compared to just upgrading to better weapons. Movement speed increases are marginal and not worth the stat point investment early on.

Base Location Strategy

Your first base should be entirely focused on safety, not aesthetics or resource density. Build on the beach. While the beach lacks metal and high-tier resources, it is mostly populated by passive or low-level creatures like Dodos, Parasaur, and Trikes. Building in the jungle or near mountains because "the resources are better" is the fastest way to get eaten by a pack of Raptors or a Terror Bird. As you establish yourself, you can build outposts further inland. Ensure your beach base has a natural barrier behind it, like a cliff face or dense rocks, to protect you from roaming predators coming from the landward side.

Early Game Mount Priorities

Do not attempt to tame a carnivore until you are at least level 20 and have a crossbow. Carnivores require meat to tame, which spoils quickly, and they are incredibly dangerous to knock out. Instead, focus on these two essential utility tames:

  • Parasaur: The ideal first tame. They are easily knocked out with a club, eat berries, and run away when attacked, making them very safe to tame. They provide a small amount of extra inventory space and can serve as an early alarm system if you put them on "Turret Mode" inside your base.
  • Triceratops (Trike): This is your endgame early-game mount. A Trike can harvest massive amounts of berries, knock down trees for thatch, and most importantly, its gore attack can easily kill low-to-mid tier predators like Raptors and Carnotaurus. Taming a high-level Trike transitions you from "surviving" to "thriving."

Pitfalls to Dodge

The island is unforgiving, and player ignorance is just as deadly as a hungry T-Rex. Avoid these common rookie errors to save yourself hours of frustration.

  • Punching Trees to Death: As mentioned in the checklist, punching trees causes a flat amount of damage to your character. Every new server wipe day, dozens of players die to the very first tree they hit. Craft a pickaxe immediately.
  • Leaving Perishables in Your Inventory: Raw meat and berries spoil incredibly fast. If you are out hunting or exploring, do not leave raw meat sitting in your hotbar or main inventory. The spoil timer only pauses if the item is placed inside a preserving bin, a refrigerator, or a creature's inventory. Transfer your raw meat to your tamed dinosaurs to act as a makeshift cooler.
  • Building Wooden Structures Too Early: Wood is heavy, hard to harvest in large quantities without a dinosaur, and extremely vulnerable. A standard wooden wall can be destroyed by a mid-level dinosaur in seconds. Stick to thatch structures until you absolutely need the durability of wood, and transition straight to stone as soon as you unlock the mortar and pestle at level 15. Stone structures cannot be damaged by standard dinosaur attacks.
  • Fighting Everything: You are at the bottom of the food chain. If you see a Carnotaurus, a Spinosaurus, or any creature you don't recognize, run. Do not stand your ground. Do not try to see how much damage you do. Flee into the water if necessary, as most terrestrial predators slow down significantly when swimming.
  • Ignoring the Day/Night Cycle: Nighttime in ARK is aggressively dark and significantly colder. If you are caught far from your base without a torch when the sun goes down, you will likely freeze to death or be picked off by a nocturnal predator. Always carry extra wood in your inventory to craft a torch on the fly. Torches provide light, warmth, and can be used as a rudimentary weapon in a pinch.
  • Wasting Engram Points: There is a specific progression path in ARK. Do not learn the Bola if you haven't learned the Spear yet. Do not learn the Fabricated Snip if you haven't learned the Mortar and Pestle. Look up an Engram calculator online before you level up to plan out exactly what you need for the next 5 to 10 levels.
  • Overencumbering in Dangerous Zones: If you are harvesting deep in the jungle or inside a cave and your weight limit turns red, drop everything non-essential immediately. Being unable to run because you wanted to keep those 50 extra pieces of rare flowers is a guaranteed way to lose all your gear, your tame, and your life.

Next Steps

Once you have secured a thatch base, crafted a bed, tamed a Trike, and established a reliable source of cooked meat, you have officially graduated from the "naked and afraid" phase of ARK. The next phase of the game requires you to look inland and upward.

Your immediate goal should be unlocking the Mortar and Pestle and the Slingbow. The mortar and pestle allows you to craft Narcotics, which are vastly superior to Narcoberries for keeping high-level dinosaurs unconscious. This paves the way for taming larger, more dangerous creatures. The Slingbow introduces you to ranged combat, allowing you to safely take down predatory dinosaurs from a distance without risking a melee encounter.

Start planning a transition to a Stone Base. Stone requires large amounts of thatch, fiber, and stone, but a single stone foundation is virtually indestructible to wild dinosaurs. Relocating your base slightly inland to a transition zone—where the beach meets the jungle—will give you access to better hunting grounds and a wider variety of taming targets.

Finally, begin exploring the water. The ocean in ARK is incredibly dangerous, but it hides some of the best early-to-mid game resources, including Silica Pearls and Oil. Craft a Raft as soon as possible. A raft acts as a mobile base, a safe haven on the water, and an excellent platform for taming aquatic dinosaurs like the Ichthyosaurus, which serves as an incredibly fast underwater mount.

ARK: Survival Evolved is a game of exponential growth. The first five hours are a grueling slog of punching, dying, and starving. But once you secure your first reliable mount and cook your first batch of narcotics, the game suddenly opens up into a vast sandbox of base building, mutation breeding, and boss fighting. Take your time, respect the environment, and never stop looking over your shoulder.
