5-Minute Primer

eFootball™ is Konami’s free-to-play football simulator, built on a new engine to deliver a fast-paced, highly tactical digital pitch experience. Unlike traditional sports games that rely on deep single-player career modes out of the box, eFootball™ is built almost entirely around online multiplayer, live-service updates, and team-building mechanics. If you are coming from older PES titles or EA's rival franchise, you need to unlearn a few habits immediately.

Here is what you need to know right now: You do not buy the game once and get all the features. The base download gives you access to standard offline matches against AI and online matches against other players using "Standard" (unlicensed, generic) teams. To play with officially licensed clubs like Manchester United, Barcelona, or AC Milan, you must acquire "Club Licenses" through the in-game store using GP (soft currency) or eFootball™ Coins (premium currency). You only need to buy a license once to keep that team forever.

Player cards operate on a "Rotation" and "Trend" system. There are no permanent 99-rated cards. Every player has an overall rating that fluctuates based on their real-world performances. Build a squad, adapt to the flow of the game, and expect your team's stats to rise and fall throughout the actual football season. The ultimate goal is to build a competitive squad of 11 "Featured Players" (special cards with boosted stats and unique playstyles) and climb the ranks in various online modes.

First Hour Checklist

When you first boot up the game, the sheer number of menus, currencies, and contracts can be overwhelming. Follow this exact checklist to get your footing without wasting precious early-game resources.

  • Complete the Tutorial: Do not skip this. The game teaches you the fundamentals of the new "Matchday" system, basic passing, and shooting. It also rewards you with a small batch of free GP.
  • Claim Pre-registration and Weekly Bonuses: Check your inbox and the "Dream Team" tab for free gifts. Konami frequently hands out free GP, contracts, and sometimes even free Featured Player tickets just for logging in during campaign periods.
  • Play the Initiation Matches: These are special matches against the AI designed to ease you into the game. Winning them yields solid GP payouts and helps you gauge the pacing of eFootball™ compared to other football games.
  • Buy ONE Club License: Go to the eFootball™ Point (GP) shop and buy the license for a team you actually want to manage. Do not spend real money (Coins) on this. Use GP. Pick a team with high base stats across the board. Clubs like FC Barcelona, Manchester City, or Bayern Munich are incredibly strong starter choices because their default rosters are packed with tall, fast players.
  • Sign Standard Players: Once you have your licensed club, go to "Sign Players" and fill out your bench and reserves with high-rated Standard players using your remaining GP. You need a full squad of 18 to compete comfortably.
  • Play a Few AI Matches: Test your new squad against the computer on a lower difficulty to get a feel for how your specific players move and pass before jumping into online matchmaking.

Key Systems Explained

The Economy: GP vs. eFootball™ Coins

Understanding the dual-currency system is vital to avoid spending real money unnecessarily. GP is the free currency earned by playing matches, completing challenges, and participating in events. You use GP to sign Standard players, hire managers, buy Club Licenses, and purchase training programs. eFootball™ Coins are the premium currency bought with real-world money. Coins are used to buy "eFootball™ Coins Packs" (which guarantee Featured Players), hire specific Featured Managers, and occasionally buy special Club Licenses. As a beginner, ignore Coins entirely. There is more than enough free GP in the game to build a highly competitive team if you are patient.

Contracts and Player Durability

This is the system that trips up most newcomers. eFootball™ uses a contract system for all matches. To use a player in a match, you must apply a contract to them. Standard players use "Standard Contracts" (earned easily through gameplay), while Featured Players use "Eternal Contracts" (a much rarer resource). If a player runs out of contracts, they cannot play until you apply more. Always keep an eye on your contract reserves. Do not blow all your Eternal Contracts early on; save them for when you have a squad of high-tier Featured Players worth investing in.

The Matchpass (Battle Pass)

Like most modern live-service games, eFootball™ features a seasonal Battle Pass called the Matchpass. You earn points by completing daily, weekly, and event challenges. The free tier offers Standard Contracts, GP, and occasionally Standard Player tickets. The premium tier (bought with eFootball™ Coins) guarantees Featured Players, Trainer Programs, and massive amounts of GP. For beginners, the free tier is more than sufficient for your first few seasons.

Gameplay Mechanics: The Basics

The gameplay in eFootball™ is heavily reliant on momentum and player individuality. Unlike games where any player can ping a 60-yard pass accurately, eFootball™ strictly enforces player stats. If you try a risky through-ball with a low-passing defender, it will likely be intercepted. The game uses an "Active" and "Plan" defending system. Active defending is manual tackling and jockeying, while Plan defending lets you set your team's defensive line and pressing intensity. Mastering the right trigger (R2/RT) to jockey and contain attackers is infinitely more valuable than spamming the slide tackle button.

Build / Character Choices

Choosing Your First Club License

Your first Club License dictates the foundation of your Dream Team. You want a license that provides high-rated Standard players so you can compete in the early tiers of online play while you save GP for Featured Players.

  • FC Barcelona: The quintessential beginner choice. Their default squad features players with excellent passing stats, high dribbling, and strong attacking positioning. They also have a deep bench of usable players.
  • Manchester United or Arsenal: Both offer a great balance of pace and physicality. In eFootball™, tall and fast players dominate. These Premier League licenses give you access to physically imposing forwards and midfielders.
  • Boca Juniors or River Plate: Do not sleep on the South American leagues. These licenses are significantly cheaper in GP than European giants but provide squads with incredible stamina, aggression, and pace. They are fantastic budget builds.

Featured Players vs. Standard Players

Standard Players are generic, unlicensed versions of real footballers (e.g., a black-and-white silhouette of Lionel Messi). They have standard stats and standard playstyles. Featured Players are the fully scanned, officially licensed versions with boosted attributes, unique shooting/passing animations, and specific "Playstyles" (like "Pinpoint Pass," "Long Range Rocket," or "Goal Poacher"). Your long-term goal is to entirely replace your Standard Players with Featured Players. However, a team of 80+ rated Standard Players can easily beat a poorly constructed team of 90+ rated Featured Players if you understand the game's mechanics.

Choosing a Manager

Managers are not just cosmetic; they dictate your team's formation, attacking/defensive mentality, and most importantly, your Team Playstyle. When signing a manager, look at their default Team Playstyle. As a beginner, avoid overly complex styles like "Tiki-Taka" or "Possession Game," as they require high passing stats across your entire squad to execute properly. Instead, look for managers with the "Quick Counter" or "Long Ball" playstyles. These strategies rely on winning the ball in your half and making fast, direct passes to your attackers—a style that perfectly suits the fast-paced nature of eFootball™ and is very forgiving if your players lack elite passing stats.

Pitfalls to Dodge

Many new players sabotage their first few weeks in eFootball™ by falling into these common traps. Learn from the mistakes of the community and avoid these pitfalls at all costs.

  • Spending Coins on GP Packs: In the shop, you can buy "GP Packs" using eFootball™ Coins. This is universally considered the worst deal in the game. You are spending real money to get a tiny amount of free currency. Never do this. If you are going to spend money, save for Featured Player packs.
  • Ignoring Player "Compatibility": Just because a player has a 90 overall rating does not mean they fit your team. Every Featured Player has a designated position and a Playstyle. If you put a "Prolific Striker" at Right Midfield, or a player with no chemistry links in your starting 11, they will suffer massive stat penalties. Always check the team screen to ensure your players have green or yellow connection lines, not red ones.
  • Spamming the Sprint Button: If you hold R2/RT constantly, your players will exhaust their stamina within 20 minutes of game time. Once stamina drops, players lose the ability to make sharp turns, their passes become sluggish, and they lose physical battles. Use sprinting tactically—only when you have open space ahead of you.
  • Forcing Through Balls: The through ball (Triangle/Y) is a powerful tool, but it is highly contextual. Spamming it in the direction of your striker will result in easy interceptions by AI defenders. Only use through balls when your attacker is already making a run behind the defensive line, or when you have a clear angle. Sometimes, a simple pass to a midfielder who is in space is far more effective.
  • Wasting "Eternal Contracts" on Bad Featured Players: Early on, you might get a few low-tier Featured Players from free tickets. Do not immediately apply 30-match Eternal Contracts to them just because they have a shiny card. Test them out using 1-match contracts first. If they do not fit your playstyle, sell them for GP or keep them on the bench. Save your Eternal Contracts for elite-tier players.
  • Auto-Defending: Letting the AI control your defenders while you chase the ball with a midfielder is a recipe for disaster. Good players will easily exploit the AI's rigid positioning. You must manually control your center backs or defensive midfielders to intercept passing lanes and jockey attackers.

Next Steps

Once you have secured your Club License, assembled a functional squad of Standard players, and played a handful of matches to understand the pacing, you are ready to enter the true grind of eFootball™. Your immediate next step is to establish a consistent GP income and begin replacing your Standard roster with Featured Players.

Focus on Events: The "Events" tab is your best friend. Konami runs daily and weekly events that offer massive GP rewards, Trainer Programs (used to level up players), and contracts. Prioritize events labeled as "Beginner" or "Rookie" to farm resources safely against easier AI opponents. As you get better, transition to the "Recommended" events, which often pit you against other low-to-mid-tier players for highly lucrative rewards.

Learn to Train and Level Up: Players level up by absorbing other players or using specific Trainer Programs. Do not blindly level up every player. Focus your resources on your core starting 11. Furthermore, pay attention to a player's "Upper Limit." Some Standard players can be trained up to an 85 or 86 overall, making them just as viable as low-tier Featured Players. A max-level Standard player is incredibly useful as a super-sub off the bench.

Transitioning to Auto- matchmaking: When you feel confident in your defending and basic passing, head into the "Auto-match" lobby. Start in the lower divisions. The matchmaking in eFootball™ is heavily dependent on your team's overall rating, so even with a mediocre team, you will be matched against similarly rated opponents. Do not get discouraged by losses. Every match you play earns you Matchpass points and GP, bringing you closer to your next Featured Player pack.

Experiment with Formations: Do not lock yourself into one formation forever. If you are struggling to score, try switching from a 4-3-3 to a 4-2-4 to add an extra striker. If you are leaking goals, switch to a 3-5-2 or a 5-3-2. Part of the fun of eFootball™ is the tactical chess match before and during the game. Pause the game at halftime, look at how your opponent is attacking you, and change your Team Playstyle or formation to counter them.

Ultimately, eFootball™ is a game of patience. You will not build a team of superstars in a week. But by managing your contracts wisely, protecting your GP, and focusing on improving your own mechanical skills on the pitch, you will gradually climb the ranks and build a Dream Team capable of dominating the opposition. Keep grinding the events, master the art of the manual tackle, and enjoy the beautiful game.
