Stormveil Castle stands as the first major legacy dungeon in Elden Ring, and it's a daunting challenge for new Tarnished. This comprehensive walkthrough will guide you through every corner of this sprawling fortress, ensuring you don't miss any valuable items, shortcuts, or secrets along the way.

Before You Enter: Preparation

Before tackling Stormveil Castle, make sure you're adequately prepared. Your character should be at least level 25-30, with your primary weapon upgraded to +3 or higher. Stock up on Smithing Stones from the Limgrave tunnels, and ensure you have plenty of healing flasks. The Margit fight at the castle entrance is notorious for being a difficulty spike, so consider summoning help if needed.

It's also worth exploring Limgrave thoroughly before entering. Collect Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears to upgrade your flasks, and grab the Whetstone Knife from the Gatefront Ruins to enable Ash of War customization. These preparations will make your journey through Stormveil significantly smoother.

Main Gate Approach

The main gate is heavily guarded, but it's the most straightforward path. From the Castleward Tunnel Site of Grace, proceed up the stairs and deal with the soldiers. Watch out for the ballista fire from above - you can either sprint through or take cover behind the stone pillars. The Exile soldiers here hit hard, so don't get greedy with your attacks.

At the top of the stairs, you'll encounter a Grafted Scion - the same enemy type that killed you at the game's beginning. This time, you're better equipped to handle it. Use the environment to your advantage, and don't be afraid to lure it back down the stairs for more room to maneuver. Defeating it rewards you with the Golden Beast Crest Shield.

The Courtyard and Rampart Tower

Once inside the courtyard, you'll find the Rampart Tower Site of Grace - activate it immediately. This area is filled with soldiers and a particularly dangerous Banished Knight. You can either fight through or sneak past using the rooftops to the left. The rooftop path is riskier but offers access to valuable items including the Smithing Stone [3].

From the Rampart Tower, head through the doorway and up the stairs. You'll encounter more soldiers and a Commoner enemy that transforms into a horrifying grafted creature. These enemies are slow but deal massive damage, so maintain your distance and use ranged attacks if possible. The room beyond contains the Rusty Key, which opens a crucial shortcut later.

Godrick's Throne Room Approach

The path to Godrick involves navigating through the castle's interior, filled with Exile soldiers and Commoners. Take your time clearing each room, as rushing will likely get you surrounded. In the dining hall, watch for the Commoner hiding behind the pillar - it's an easy ambush to fall for.

The lift room is particularly treacherous. Multiple soldiers guard the area, and there's a Banished Knight patrolling nearby. Clear the soldiers first, then deal with the knight one-on-one. The lift itself leads to a lower area with the Liftside Chamber Site of Grace and access to the Secluded Cell where you can find Nepheli Loux, a valuable summon for the Godrick fight.

Secret Areas and Optional Content

Stormveil Castle is packed with secrets. The most significant is the hidden path to the Ulcerated Tree Spirit boss, accessible by dropping down from a specific balcony near the Rampart Tower. This optional boss guards a Golden Seed, making it worth the challenge for players who want maximum flask charges.

Another secret involves the rooftop area accessible from the Liftside Chamber. By carefully navigating the exterior walls, you can reach a tower containing the Chrysalids' Memento and several Smithing Stones. This area is dangerous due to the narrow walkways and aggressive hawks, but the rewards justify the risk.

Boss Fight: Godrick the Grafted

Godrick is a two-phase boss that tests everything you've learned so far. In phase one, focus on his slow, telegraphed attacks. Roll through his axe swings and punish during his recovery frames. His grab attack is devastating but easily avoided by rolling backward twice. Summoning Nepheli Loux significantly eases this phase, as she can draw aggro while you attack from behind.

Phase two begins when Godrick grafts a dragon head onto his arm. His moveset expands to include fire attacks with extended range. Stay close to his legs to avoid most fire attacks, but be ready to roll away when he does his area-of-effect flame burst. The key is patience - don't get greedy, and take your healing opportunities when he's focused on your summon.

Post-Godrick Rewards

Defeating Godrick rewards you with his Great Rune and 20,000 Runes. Don't forget to activate the Great Rune at the Divine Tower of Limgrave, accessible from the bridge behind the boss arena. The tower climb is straightforward and grants you access to Godrick's power, which significantly boosts all your attributes when activated with a Rune Arc.

After the fight, explore the throne room thoroughly. You'll find the Grafted Blade Greatsword, a colossal weapon perfect for strength builds. The path beyond leads to Liurnia of the Lakes, the next major area in your journey. Before leaving, consider returning to earlier areas of the castle to collect any items you missed - with Godrick defeated, you can explore at your leisure without worrying about the boss fight ahead.
