Honkai Beginner's Guide - Tips & Tricks
Getting Started
Downloading Honkai Impact 3rd is your gateway into one of the most mechanically rich mobile action RPGs on the market. Before you even touch the main menu, make sure you have a stable Wi-Fi connection, as the initial download requires a few gigabytes of high-quality assets. Upon launching the game for the first time, you are not creating a traditional custom character; instead, you are adopting the role of the Captain of the Hyperion, a battleship tasked with protecting humanity from zombie-like creatures called the Honkai.
Your very first moments will be spent watching a high-octane prologue that introduces you to the game's flagship character, Kiana Kaslana. Do not worry if the story feels overwhelming at first—Honkai's lore is notoriously dense, spanning alternate universes, time travel, and complex organizations. As a beginner, your only goal right now is to absorb the vibes and get a feel for the combat.
The Initial Gacha Pull
After clearing the prologue, the game will quickly guide you to the gacha system—referred to in-game as Battlesuits expansion. You will be given a batch of free currency to perform your first few 10-pulls. This initial pull is crucial because it dictates how smooth your first few weeks will be. While veteran players may tell you to "reroll" for a top-tier character (commonly known as Void Archangel or Herrscher of Reason), as a true beginner, it is highly recommended to simply play through what you get. Rerolling takes hours and the game provides an abundance of free premium currency early on to build a solid team naturally.
Once you have your initial roster, take a moment to look at the battlesuits you acquired. Note their archetypes: Melee, Ranged, and Support. Understanding which of your starting characters fits into these categories will form the foundation of your early-game strategy.

Core Mechanics
Honkai Impact 3rd sets itself apart from other gacha games through its combat. It plays more like a traditional character action game (think Bayonetta or Devil May Cry) than a standard turn-based RPG. To survive, you must master three foundational mechanics.
The Ultimate Evade (QTE)
This is the single most important mechanic in the entire game. When you dodge an enemy attack at the exact right moment, you trigger an Ultimate Evade. The screen will flash, time will slow down briefly, and your character will become invincible for a short duration. More importantly, Ultimate Evades generate SP (Skill Points), which are required to unleash your character's most powerful attacks. If you find yourself running out of SP constantly, you are not dodging enough. Never just walk away from an attack; always dodge through it.
Switching and Team Composition
You do not fight alone. You bring a team of three battlesuits into a stage, and you can switch between them on the fly. Switching is not just for when your health gets low; it is a core damage mechanic. Every character in the game possesses a passive ability called a QTE (Quick Time Event). When an enemy is stunned, launched into the air, or knocked down by a specific type of attack, switching to the correct character will trigger their QTE—a devastating, automated attack that deals massive damage and provides invincibility frames. A standard team consists of a Primary DPS (the main damage dealer), a Support (who buffs the DPS or provides crowd control), and a Valkyrie who excels at triggering the QTE conditions for the DPS.
Stamina and Combo Mechanics
Attacking consumes stamina (the yellow bar beneath your health). If you exhaust your stamina completely, your character will be left gasping for breath, unable to attack or dodge, which is a death sentence on higher difficulties. You must learn to pause your combo strings to let stamina regenerate. Additionally, basic attacks can be chained into evades, and evades can be chained into special attacks. Mastering the flow of Attack > Evade > Special > Switch is the difference between a beginner and an intermediate player.

Early Game Tips
The first 24 hours in Honkai Impact 3rd can feel like drinking from a firehose. The game throws dozens of menus, currencies, and game modes at you. Here is exactly what you should prioritize to maximize your early progress.
- Push the Story Campaign: Your number one priority is advancing the main story. Story chapters reward massive amounts of crystals (premium currency), experience materials, and equipment. Do not get bogged down doing side activities until you hit a wall in the story.
- Complete Your Daily Missions: Every day, you are given a checklist of tasks. Completing them fills up an experience bar that grants you a massive chest of resources, including crystals and stamina. Never miss your dailies.
- Claim the Beginner Benefits: Open the events panel and look for the "Beginner's Journey" or "Raiders" event. This is a multi-week checklist that gives you an enormous amount of free gear, stigmata (accessories), and weapons. Follow this checklist strictly.
- Focus on One Team: Do not spread your upgrade resources across six different characters. Pick your best DPS, figure out which support characters work best with them, and funnel all of your skill points and experience into that specific trio of three characters.
- Leave Complex Game Modes Alone: You will see modes like Elysian Realm, Memorial Arena, and Superstring Dimension. These are endgame modes. Do not let them intimidate you. You can ignore them entirely until your account is at least a month old.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Every veteran Captain has a list of regrets from their first few weeks. By avoiding these classic blunders, you will save yourself days of wasted effort.
- Upgrading Bad Stigmata: Stigmata are the game's accessory system (top, middle, bottom slots). Early on, you will get a lot of 2-star and 3-star stigmata. Do not waste your gold upgrading them. Stigmata gain set bonuses when you wear a full set of the same name, and low-tier sets are useless later. Only invest gold into 4-star or 5-star stigmata, ideally ones that form a complete set.
- Using Crystals for Stamina Refills: Crystals are the most valuable currency in the game because they are used to pull for new characters and weapons. Spending them to refill your stamina so you can play more is a trap. If you are out of stamina, close the game and come back tomorrow.
- Ignoring Weapon Skills: A weapon's base attack stat matters, but its active skill matters more. Some 3-star weapons have incredible active skills that can carry you through the entire early game. Read what a weapon does before you unequip it just because a 4-star weapon has slightly higher physical damage.
- Pulling on the Standard Banner: There are multiple gacha banners. The standard banner (called Expansion) is a trap for beginners because the rates for top-tier items are incredibly low. Save your crystals for Focused Supply banners, which feature specific, powerful battlesuits, or Equipment banners that feature highly recommended weapons.
- Playing on Auto-Battle Too Early: The game features an auto-battle function. While great for farming low-level stages you have already mastered, relying on it while learning the game will prevent you from internalizing combo timings and dodge windows. Turn auto off until you are completely comfortable with a stage.
- Hording Resources "Just in Case": Some beginners refuse to use their top-tier weapons because they want to save them for a character they don't own yet. Use your best gear on your current best character. A strong weapon you are using is always better than a perfect weapon sitting in your inventory.

Essential Controls & Settings
Whether you are playing on a mobile device or an emulator/PC, having your controls optimized is critical for executing advanced combos. The game offers deep customization, but you should start with a proven baseline.
Default Key Bindings (PC/Emulator)
- W, A, S, D: Movement
- J (or Left Click): Basic Attack
- K (or Right Click): Evade / Ultimate Evade
- U (or Spacebar): Ultimate Skill (Requires full SP bar)
- I, O, P: Switch to Team Member 1, 2, or 3
- L: Weapon Active Skill
Crucial Settings to Change Immediately
Before you enter your second battle, pause the game and navigate to the Settings menu. Here are the adjustments you need to make:
- Camera Speed: Increase this to 80 or 90. The default camera is too sluggish to keep up with fast enemies, which can cause you to lose track of off-screen attacks.
- Lock-On Behavior: Change this to "Manual" or "Toggle." The default auto-lock frequently switches targets mid-combo, which will ruin your QTE setups. You want complete control over who you are hitting.
- Button Size (Mobile): If playing on a phone, increase the size of the Evade button. Missing a dodge because your thumb slipped off a tiny button is incredibly frustrating.
- Skip Animations: If available for non-story content, turn this on. It drastically speeds up the grind when you are farming materials for the tenth time.
Progression System
Honkai Impact 3rd features a dual-layered progression system: your account level and your individual character levels. Understanding how these interact is vital for efficient leveling.
Captain Level
This is your overall account level. Captain level dictates what story chapters you can play, what game modes are unlocked, and what level cap your characters can reach. You level up your Captain by spending Trainee EXP or Crystals in the Captain's Skills menu. Pro tip: Never spend crystals to level up your Captain. Always use Trainee EXP. You earn plenty of it through daily missions and open-world events.
Battlesuit Leveling
Each individual battlesuit has its own level. To level up a battlesuit, you spend EXP Materials (Skill Points, broken down into basic, intermediate, and advanced tiers). The golden rule of progression is to never exceed your Captain Level. If your Captain is Level 30, your characters cannot go past Level 30. Therefore, do not waste high-tier EXP materials on a character if they are already at the cap; save those materials for when your Captain levels up again.
Ranking Up (Breaking Through)
Leveling a character is only step one. To unlock their full potential, you must Rank Up them. When a battlesuit reaches its maximum level for its current rank, you must use specific materials to increase its rank (e.g., from Rank S to Rank SS). Ranking up unlocks the character's passive skills, enhances their basic attacks, and improves their QTE damage. Prioritize ranking up your main DPS character first, as they benefit the most from the stat multipliers.
Pri-Armor Evolution
For certain specific battlesuits, the progression goes even further. When you obtain duplicate copies of a character (called fragments), you can eventually perform a Pri-Armor evolution. This fundamentally changes the character's gameplay, giving them a new weapon type, a new ultimate attack, and vastly superior stats. This is an endgame pursuit, but it gives you a long-term goal to work toward.
Resources & Where to Find Help
Honkai Impact 3rd has been running for years, meaning the community has documented virtually every piece of data in the game. Relying on community resources is not cheating; it is expected. The in-game tutorials are notoriously bad at explaining complex mechanics, so you will need outside help.
Essential Websites
- Honkai Impact 3rd Wiki (Fandom): This is your encyclopedia. Whenever you get a new piece of gear or a new character, look them up here. It will explain their exact damage formulas, recommended team compositions, and which stigmata sets work best for them.
- OpenChest: An incredibly useful fan-made website that calculates the exact probability of pulling a specific item from the gacha based on your current pity count. Use this to plan out your crystal spending months in advance.
Video Guides & Content Creators
Because combat is so mechanical, reading about it is often less effective than watching it. YouTube is your best friend here. Search for channels that specialize in Honkai Impact 3rd. Look for videos titled "Beginner's Guide [Current Year]" to get the most up-to-date advice regarding the current meta. Furthermore, watching high-level players clear endgame content will teach you advanced tech, such as "canceling"—the act of interrupting an attack animation with a dodge or weapon skill to keep yourself safe while maximizing damage output.
In-Game Help & Friends List
Do not ignore the "Friends" and "Armada" (Guild) systems. Joining an active Armada unlocks the Armada shop, where you can exchange guild currency for highly valuable stigmata and materials. Additionally, having high-level friends allows you to "borrow" their characters as a support unit during tough story stages, which can essentially carry you through content you have no business beating yet. Be active in Armada chat; veteran players are usually more than happy to answer specific questions about team building or progression.
