Masks Beginner's Guide - Tips & Tricks

The Apothicon God Mask lets you take 10 hits. The Wolf Mask extends sprint duration. Most new players chase the wrong one first and bleed out on round 12.

Get the Wolf Mask first for mobility, the Viking Helmet second, and push for the Apothicon God Mask as your primary mid-game goal. The God Mask's mechanism—expanding your health pool to absorb 10 hits—overrides every other defensive upgrade in Revelations, making it the single most important item for a new player trying to survive past the early rounds. The other five masks are cosmetic or offer marginal perks that will not save a sloppy run.

The Problem With Chasing Every Mask

The SERP consensus frames all eight masks as equally valuable collectibles. They are not. Seven of them are either minor convenience upgrades or pure cosmetics. One of them fundamentally changes how penalty works in this map.

Revelations is a fragmented map. You spend the first 15 minutes running between micro-locations—Der Eisendrache, Shangri-La, Nacht der Untoten—before you have any real firepower. Sprint duration (Wolf Mask) directly reduces the time you spend exposed in transition zones. Health absorption (God Mask) directly reduces the severity of the punishment when you get caught in those zones. The other masks do neither.

Al "the Weasel"'s hat from the Mob of the Dead area is the most honest example of this disparity. You can pick it up, wear it, and it does nothing. No hidden effect, no damage reduction, no stat boost. Treat four of the other masks with the same suspicion until you have the God Mask secured.

Priority 1: The Wolf Mask (Sprint Duration)

The Wolf Mask increases your sprint duration. In a map built on long connector paths between fragmented zones, sprint duration is survival time.

Location: Der Eisendrache area.

Mechanism: Stand facing the direction of Shangri-La. Locate the crypt with a hole in the wall. Throw a grenade into the hole, which causes a wolf's skull to drop.

Execution: Kill 15 to 20 zombies near the dropped wolf skull. The mask becomes available for pickup once the kill requirement is met.

This should happen in your first hour. You do not need upgraded weapons, you do not need to open complex pathways, and you do not need a coordinated team. A single grenade and basic crowd control are sufficient. The outcome is immediate: you spend less time jogging and more time repositioning with intent.

Priority 2: The Viking Helmet

The Viking Helmet is the second-easy mask to acquire, which is why it holds the number-two slot. Its effect is less transformative than the Wolf Mask's mobility bonus, but the time investment is similarly low.

Location: Nacht der Untoten area.

Because the Viking Helmet requires minimal setup and no Easter egg progression, it functions as a low-risk pickup while you are establishing your economy in the early rounds. Grab it when the path is clear. Do not go out of your way or sacrifice point economy for it.

Priority 3: The Apothicon God Mask (10-Hit Health Pool)

This is the only mask that qualifies as a mandatory pickup. The Apothicon God Mask's mechanism expands your damage threshold to 10 hits before you enter downed state. For a new player, this converts a fatal mistake into a recoverable error.

Location: Unlocked through main Easter egg progression.

Trade-off: You cannot get this in your first hour. It requires advancing the Revelations main Easter egg to a specific stage. This means you need a functional loadout, a basic understanding of the map's fragment mechanics, and probably a team that is not constantly going down.

The mistake new players make here is attempting the God Mask unlock before they have stable point flow. If you are struggling to buy doors and wall weapons, you are not ready for Easter egg steps. Secure your early-game economy first, grab the Wolf Mask and Viking Helmet during that phase, then pivot to Easter egg progression once you have a reliable weapon and Juggernog equivalent stability.

Once acquired, the God Mask removes the instant-death tension that makes Revelations punishing for beginners. A zombie train collapsing on you, a missed peripheral shot from a Margwa, a mistimed reload—these become inconveniences rather than run-enders. That is the outcome you are optimizing for.

The Five Masks to Skip Until Later

These masks exist. They have unlock requirements. None of them justify diverting from the Wolf → Viking → God priority pipeline.

  • Keeper Mask: Available in the Keeper area. Cosmetic or marginal effect. Does not change your survival calculus.
  • Fury Mask: Unlocked through its own specific requirement. Low impact on early-to-mid game survival.
  • Templar Knight Helmet: Requires interaction in the appropriate zone. Not worth the time investment when you lack basic infrastructure.
  • Margwa Mask: Thematic pickup from the Margwa zone. A trap for players who confuse thematic relevance with mechanical value.
  • Al the Weasel's Hat: Found in the Mob of the Dead area. Explicitly has no effect. The most honest item on this list.

Return for these after you have the God Mask and can afford to spend time on low-impact activities.

Beginner Mistakes That Cost Runs

Mask-chasing is a symptom of a larger problem: new players treat Revelations like a checklist instead of an economy game. The specific failure states look like this:

Rushing the God Mask with no points. You need wall weapons, door access, and basic perks before Easter egg steps become viable. The mask does not help you if you cannot reach it.

Fighting in transition zones. The space between Der Eisendrache and Shangri-La is where runs die. You are not supposed to kill zombies there. You are supposed to sprint through it. The Wolf Mask exists to make this possible.

Ignoring the 15-20 zombie requirement on the Wolf Mask. If you throw the grenade and then wander off, the skull sits there. You need to pull a manageable cluster of zombies to that specific spot and kill them in proximity. Lure, bunch, dump ammo, collect mask.

Your First Three Hours, Sequenced

  1. Rounds 1-5: Build point economy in the starting area. Knife, burst, maximize point-per-kill efficiency.
  2. Rounds 5-8: Open path to Der Eisendrache. Throw grenade in crypt hole. Pull zombies to the skull. Kill 15-20. Pick up Wolf Mask.
  3. Rounds 8-12: Establish a training spot. Buy reliable wall weapons. Pick up Viking Helmet when Nacht der Untoten area is accessible and safe.
  4. Rounds 12+: Begin Easter egg progression with the explicit goal of reaching the Apothicon God Mask unlock stage. Do not attempt earlier steps without a team that can hold a training spot without constant revives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Apothicon God Mask break the game?

It does not break the game, but it drastically lowers the penalty for mistakes. Taking 10 hits means a new player can survive a train collapsing on them or a missed peripheral shot, which is why it is the highest-priority unlock despite the setup requirement.

Can you get Al the Weasel's hat in Revelations?

Yes, you can pick up Al the Weasel's hat from the Mob of the Dead area. It is a cosmetic item only and provides no gameplay effects or bonuses.

Do you need all eight masks for the main Easter egg?

No. The masks are side collectibles. Only the Apothicon God Mask is tied to Easter egg progression. The remaining seven are optional and can be collected in any order after your core setup is complete.

Disclaimer: Black Ops 3 Zombies mechanics and map layouts are based on the published console and PC versions of Revelations. Specific patch changes may alter mask effects or unlock requirements.
