Over The Top Tier List - Best Characters & Builds
Tier List Overview
In Over The Top, mastering the arm-wrestling mechanics requires more than just mashing buttons or relying on raw strength. The game intricately blends leverage, stamina management, psychological conditioning, and environmental factors to determine the true king of the table. Because raw stats can easily be mitigated by a superior tactical build, this tier list ranks the absolute best builds in the game. A build comprises a specific character's inherent traits paired with a specialized weapon—your hand/grip type—and the corresponding skill tree path.
Ranking individual characters or standalone weapons ignores the synergistic nature of Over The Top. A high-strength character with the wrong grip will gas out in seconds, while a low-strength character with a maxed-out leverage build can topple giants. These rankings are based on the current meta, focusing on consistency in high-level play, win conditions against the hardest CPU opponents, and dominance in PvP ranked matches. Whether you are trying to dethrone the defending champion or climb the online leaderboards, understanding which builds dictate the flow of a match is crucial for leaving your opponents physically and mentally broken.

S Tier
S Tier builds are the undisputed champions of Over The Top. These configurations have such overwhelming synergy that they practically dictate the meta. They possess multiple viable win conditions, excel in both offensive and defensive scenarios, and require highly specific counter-builds to even stand a chance. If you want to win with the least amount of friction, these are the builds you need to master.
The Iron Serpent (Leverage Build)
This is the single most dominant force in the current state of the game. The Iron Serpent relies on the character Sly "The Viper" Jenkins, equipped with the Hook Grip and fully invested in the Leverage skill tree. Sly’s passive ability, "Low Center of Gravity," naturally reduces his stamina drain when pushed backward by five percent. When combined with the Hook Grip—which prevents the opponent from easily slipping their hand up to break your leverage—and the Leverage tree's "Top-Roll Dominance" skill, this build creates an inescapable vortex.
- Win Condition: The moment the "Go" prompt drops, you initiate a slight lateral pull. Because of the Hook Grip, the opponent cannot counter your hand position. As they desperately try to muscle you down the middle, the Leverage tree multiplies your lateral force. You slowly peel their hand over to the side, draining their stamina bar at an accelerated rate because they are fighting against a mechanical disadvantage.
- Why it’s S Tier: It has virtually no bad matchups. Even against heavy-hitting strength builds, the Iron Serpent forces them to burn through their entire stamina pool before they can even begin to move your hand. It is a forgiving build that controls the pace of the match entirely from the defensive side.
The Cybernetic Titan (Rushdown Build)
If the Iron Serpent is a slow, suffocating death, The Cybernetic Titan is a lightning strike. This build utilizes the character Boris "The Bear" Volkov, paired with the Pronated Strap Grip and a heavy investment into the Strength and Explosive Power skill trees. Boris has the highest raw strength stat in the game, but his downside is incredibly slow stamina recovery. The Pronated Strap Grip fixes his only weakness by locking his wrist in place, completely eliminating the stamina penalty usually associated with taking a bad wrist angle.
- Win Condition: Pure, unadulterated aggression. You use the "Psych-Out" mechanic at the loading screen to lower their starting morale, and the second the match begins, you dump all your stamina into a center-drive. The Strap Grip ensures you don't lose your wrist position, and the Explosive Power skill tree triggers a massive damage multiplier if you move the opponent's hand within the first two seconds of the match.
- Why it’s S Tier: It is the ultimate scrub-killer and a terrifying build in high-level PvP. Human players instinctively panic when their hand is moved instantly, leading to mistimed resistance inputs. Against CPU opponents, it bypasses the complex late-stage mechanics entirely, ending the match in five seconds.

A Tier
A Tier builds are exceptionally strong and capable of winning any tournament. They fall just shy of S Tier because they usually have one specific, exploitable weakness—such as a hard counter in the meta, a higher mechanical skill ceiling, or a reliance on winning a specific psychological minigame to function at full capacity.
The Mind Breaker (Psychological Build)
This build turns Over The Top into a psychological horror game. It centers around the character Ricky "The Shark" Calhoun, using the Finger Grip and maxing out the Psychological Warfare skill tree. Ricky’s inherent trait, "Stone Face," makes reading his micro-expressions during the "Ready" phase nearly impossible for human opponents. The Finger Grip allows for subtle, micro-adjustments that look like hesitations, tricking the opponent into committing their stamina prematurely.
- Win Condition: You win before the arm even moves. By using feints, false starts that stop just outside the foul line, and taunts, you fill the opponent's "Anxiety Meter." Once the Anxiety Meter is full, their inputs suffer from a half-second delay, and their stamina drain increases by twenty percent. You then casually pivot into a standard top-roll to secure the pin.
- Why it’s A Tier: It is incredibly effective, but it hard-counters itself against CPU opponents, who do not have human psychology to exploit. In PvP, it is devastating, but if the opponent recognizes the build and simply ignores your feints, you are left with a mediocre stat line and a weak grip.
The Endurance Wall (Stamina Build)
The Endurance Wall is the ultimate test of patience. It uses the character Tommy "The Oak" O'Reilly, equipped with the Standard Grip and the entire Stamina Recovery tree. Tommy’s passive, "Second Wind," gives him a brief stamina regeneration boost if he survives being within an inch of the pin pad. The Standard Grip provides balanced stats, acting purely as a neutral conduit for this build's true purpose: outlasting the opponent.
- Win Condition: You intentionally take a slightly compromised position, baiting the opponent into dumping their stamina to try and finish you off. Right before you hit the pad, you trigger a "Desperation Block," draining your remaining stamina to freeze the hand in place. Because your stamina regeneration is tripled, you recover while they are completely empty, allowing you to easily push their limp hand down.
- Why it’s A Tier: It requires perfect timing on the Desperation Block. If you mistime it, you lose instantly. Furthermore, it completely falls apart against the S Tier Iron Serpent build, which doesn't rely on dumping stamina but rather on passive leverage damage.

B Tier
B Tier builds are the workhorses of Over The Top. They are reliable, well-rounded, and will serve a player perfectly fine through the majority of the single-player campaign and into the mid-ranks of online play. However, they lack the specialized tools needed to consistently overcome top-tier players who are optimizing their matchups.
The Balanced Brawler (All-Rounder Build)
This is the default "do-everything" build. It pairs the main story protagonist, Lincoln Hawk, with the Toad Grip and an even distribution of points across Strength, Leverage, and Stamina. Lincoln’s trait, "Father's Resolve," grants a flat five percent boost to all stats when his health drops below fifty percent in tournament mode. The Toad Grip provides a slight bonus to both lateral movement and downward pressure, making it a versatile but unremarkable choice.
- Win Condition: Fundamentals. You win by reading the opponent's stamina bar and reacting appropriately—pushing when they are weak, resisting when they are strong. There is no complex gimmick here, just raw mechanical execution of the game's core mechanics.
- Why it’s B Tier: In a game heavily reliant on specialization and min-maxing, a jack-of-all-trades is a master of none. High-level opponents will identify your lack of a dedicated win condition and simply exploit your average stats with their hyper-tuned S and A Tier builds.
The Wrist Breaker (Angle Build)
This build focuses entirely on manipulating the wrist joint. It uses the character Victor "The Vise" Romano, the King's Grip, and the Wrist Control skill tree. Victor has naturally high wrist stiffness, allowing him to maintain awkward angles. The King's Grip excels at rolling the opponent's wrist backward, putting intense pressure on their forearm.
- Win Condition: Forcing a "Wrist Break" submission. Instead of pinning the hand to the pad, you manipulate the angle until the opponent's wrist physically gives out, triggering an automatic forfeit animation.
- Why it’s B Tier: While incredibly satisfying, the Wrist Break submission requires you to hold a highly specific angle for three uninterrupted seconds. Any opponent with a basic understanding of the leverage mechanics can simply step their elbow to relieve the pressure. It is a high-risk, low-consistency strategy that looks amazing when it works but is easily countered.

C Tier
C Tier builds are fundamentally flawed, highly situational, or just mathematically inferior to other options available in Over The Top. These are builds you might use for a self-imposed challenge run or to unlock specific achievements, but you should actively avoid bringing them into a serious competitive environment.
The Gambler (RNG Build)
The Gambler utilizes the character "Lucky" Pete Davidson, the Loose Grip, and randomly assigns skill points using the game's auto-level feature. Pete’s unique trait, "Hail Mary," gives him a one-in-ten chance of dealing critical, instant-pin damage on any given input. The Loose Grip heavily increases movement speed but drastically reduces your ability to hold your position.
- Win Condition: Praying to the random number generator. You flutter your hand around the table at high speeds, hoping to randomly proc the critical hit before the opponent realizes you have no actual defense.
- Why it’s C Tier: Competitive gaming is about removing variance, not embracing it. Relying on a ten percent chance to win means you will lose ninety percent of your matches against a player with a functioning brain. It is a gimmick that ceases to be amusing after the fifth consecutive loss.
The Pure Brute (Unga Bunga Build)
This build takes a generic heavyweight character, equips the Bare Knuckle Grip (which provides a tiny strength boost at the cost of grip security), and dumps one hundred percent of the skill points into raw Strength, ignoring Stamina and Leverage entirely. The idea is to just press forward and win through sheer force.
- Win Condition: Overwhelming an opponent who is too slow to react or who has neglected their own stamina stats.
- Why it’s C Tier: Over The Top went out of its way to ensure that raw strength without technique is a losing strategy. Without any leverage, your forward pushes are easily redirected to the side. Without any stamina, you gas out after three seconds of resistance. Any B Tier build or higher will make a Pure Brute look like a child throwing a tantrum at the table.
How to Use This Tier List
While this tier list provides a definitive ranking of the game's current archetypes, it is important to understand the context of Over The Top’s design philosophy to get the most out of these rankings. The game is heavily inspired by real-world arm-wrestling mechanics, meaning that leverage, timing, and technique will almost always triumph over brute force. Therefore, builds that exploit the game's physics engine—like the S Tier Leverage builds—are inherently going to sit at the top.
Keep in mind that Over The Top receives frequent balance patches, primarily tweaking the stamina drain values of various grips. If a patch nerfs the Hook Grip's security, the Iron Serpent might drop down to A Tier, opening the door for other builds to dominate. Always check the latest patch notes before committing your hard-earned skill points to a specific tree.
Furthermore, your personal playstyle should heavily influence your choice. If you have exceptional reaction times but poor psychological composure, the Mind Breaker (A Tier) will feel like a C Tier build to you, while the Cybernetic Titan (S Tier) will feel perfectly tailored to your skills. Conversely, if you are a calm, methodical player who excels at reading opponents, the Endurance Wall or Iron Serpent will catapult your ranking potential. Use this tier list as a roadmap for what is objectively powerful, but do not be afraid to tweak the secondary skills within these builds to suit your specific mechanical strengths. Mastering the synergy between your character, your grip, and your skill tree is the true key to going over the top.
