Tier List Overview

Resident Evil Requiem (RE9) represents a massive evolution for the franchise, blending the claustrophobic survival horror of the classic era with the aggressive, shape-shifting mechanics introduced in recent entries. Because RE9 leans so heavily into its new "Metamorphosis" combat system—allowing players to briefly mutate their own biology to gain combat advantages—traditional tier lists based solely on static weapons fall short. Instead, the most accurate way to rank the game's mechanics is by evaluating Builds. A build in RE9 is defined by the combination of a primary weapon archetype, a chosen Metamorphosis strain, and the associated skill tree investments.

This tier list ranks the best overall builds in Resident Evil Requiem based on their efficiency in the grueling "Abyss" difficulty, boss fight consistency, resource management, and general viability throughout the campaign. Whether you prefer to keep your distance as a tactical sniper, mutate into a close-range blender, or rely on a balanced jack-of-all-trades approach, understanding which builds rise to the top will drastically improve your survival odds against the game's relentless bio-organic horrors.

S Tier

The Crimson Carapace (Shotgun + Chitin Strain)

The undisputed king of Resident Evil Requiem. The Crimson Carapace build revolves around the "Ripper" semi-automatic shotgun and the Chitin Metamorphosis strain. The Chitin strain temporarily covers the player character in a hardened, spiked biological armor that reduces incoming damage by 60% and reflects a portion of melee damage back to attackers.

The reason this build sits firmly in S Tier comes down to two words: crowd control. RE9 frequently throws dense packs of highly mobile "Stalker" enemies at you. Normal weapons require precise aiming to stagger them, but the Ripper shotgun paired with the Chitin strain's wide-area ground-pound ability creates an immediate, safe breach in enemy lines. Furthermore, the armor effect negates the chip damage that typically forces players to burn through green herbs. By investing your skill points into Shotgun Spread and Chitin Duration, you become an unstoppable juggernaut in corridors, making even the most chaotic ambushes feel manageable.

The Neuro-Toxin Assassin (Handgun + Neuro Strain)

If the Crimson Carapace is a hammer, the Neuro-Toxin Assassin is a scalpel, and it is arguably the most effective boss-killing build in the entire game. This build pairs the base "Warden" handgun with the Neuro Metamorphosis strain. The Neuro strain alters your character's metabolism to produce toxic pheromones, which can be channeled into your attacks to cause massive, rapid damage-over-time (DoT) and severe stun locking.

By maximizing the Handgun Critical Hit chance in the skill tree and applying the Neuro strain's "Synaptic Overload" ability, you can consistently trigger critical headshots that inject enemies with a lethal neurotoxin. Against RE9's towering Lords, this DoT eats through their massive health pools while you simply dodge and reposition. The handgun also boasts the best ammo economy in the game. By late game, you will be swimming in handgun ammo, completely bypassing the resource scarcity that plagues other builds. It requires high mechanical skill to consistently land headshots, but the payout is absolute dominance in one-on-one encounters.

The Pyroclastic Demolisher (Magnum + Pyre Strain)

Every Resident Evil game needs a "nuke" option, and the Pyroclastic Demolisher is exactly that. Utilizing the devastating "Hellfire" Magnum and the Pyre Strain—a Metamorphosis that superheats your blood, causing your attacks to explode on impact—this build is designed for players who want to end fights before they even begin.

Magnum ammo is notoriously rare in RE9, but this build turns every single shot into a miniature tactical nuke. When you activate the Pyre strain's "Eruption" skill, your next three magnum shots will not only deal massive upfront damage but also leave a lingering pool of fire that damages and panics surrounding enemies. This is the only build in the game that can completely skip certain encounter phases by simply deleting the enemy's health bar. It drops down slightly from the top two spots only because its downtime is punishing; without active Pyre buffs or magnum ammo, you are forced to rely on a weak backup weapon. But when this build is online, nothing in Requiem can stand in your way.

A Tier

The Ghost Protocol (Suppressor Rifle + Shadow Strain)

Stealth has always been a secondary option in Resident Evil, but the Ghost Protocol build makes it a highly viable primary strategy. This setup uses the suppressed "Specter" assault rifle alongside the Shadow Strain, which bends light around the player to grant near-invisibility and silences footsteps for a limited time.

This build excels because RE9 features dynamic enemy AI that actively listens for gunfire and alerts nearby rooms. By using the Shadow strain to slip past encounters entirely, or to silently execute unaware enemies from behind for instant kills, you save massive amounts of health and ammo. The Specter rifle is no slouch in a straight fight either, offering excellent mid-range stability. The only reason this build isn't S Tier is that stealth is heavily nerfed during boss fights and later "Siege" sections where enemies are biologically immune to the Shadow strain's cloaking effect, forcing you to adapt to a more traditional gunplay style where it is merely "good" instead of "perfect."

The Shock Trooper (Submachine Gun + Volt Strain)

For players who struggle with managing ammo types and want a fast-paced, highly aggressive playstyle, the Shock Trooper is a phenomenal choice. Combining the "Drifter" SMG with the Volt Strain—which coats your arms in conductive bio-electricity—allows you to stun-lock entire rooms of enemies with rapid, low-recoil gunfire.

The Volt Strain's unique trait is that every 15th hit automatically triggers a chain-lightning effect that arcs between nearby enemies. When paired with the high fire rate of the SMG, you are constantly triggering these arcs, turning group encounters into a dazzling light show of paralyzed enemies. It is incredibly forgiving for newer players because if you miss a shot, the sheer volume of bullets compensates for your poor aim. However, the SMG chews through ammo so quickly that you will frequently find yourself scraping the bottom of your reserves during longer chapters, preventing it from reaching the highest tier.

B Tier

The Survivalist Purist (No Metamorphosis / Knife Focus)

Resident Evil purists will naturally gravitate toward this build: ignoring the Metamorphosis system entirely to focus on classic knife combos, defensive items like frag grenades, and standard pistol usage. The game actually rewards this playstyle with a unique "Purist" skill tree that increases the durability of your combat knife and allows you to deflect enemy projectiles.

In the early game, this build feels incredibly satisfying, echoing the classic feel of Resident Evil 4. However, as RE9 progresses, the enemy design becomes blatantly hostile to non-mutated players. By the halfway point, standard enemies gain hyper-armor that can only be reliably broken by Metamorphosis abilities. You will find yourself relying entirely on valuable explosive items just to create breathing room. It is a highly respectable and fun way to play on Standard difficulty, but on higher tiers, the lack of bio-organic tools makes it a grind.

The Bio-Triage Medic (Shotgun / Leech Strain)

The Leech Strain is RE9’s most bizarre mechanic. It allows you to attach biological leeches to enemies. As the leeches deal damage, they convert a percentage of it into small green and red herb drops. When paired with a shotgun for safe, mid-range leech application, it creates a build theoretically capable of infinite sustain.

The reality is a bit more cumbersome. The leeches take too long to drain enemy health to be practical in fast-paced combat, and the healing they provide is minimal, often falling short of the damage you take while waiting for the drops. It shines in specific, prolonged boss fights where you can attach leeches during safe phases, but for general exploration, it is simply too slow and leaves you vulnerable to ambushes while you wait for your biology to do its work.

C Tier

The Hemophage Brawler (Fists / Blood Strain)

On paper, turning your arms into massive, fleshy adamantium claws sounds like the ultimate power fantasy. The Hemophage Brawler abandons firearms almost entirely, relying on the Blood Strain to buff melee damage and attack speed to absurd levels.

In practice, this is a trap build. RE9's enemy tracking is notoriously aggressive, and the melee dodge mechanics are intentionally stiff to prevent players from just spamming dodge attacks. To get close enough to use your claws, you have to navigate through a gauntlet of grabbing attacks and projectile spits. When you finally reach an enemy, you might get one or two combos off before they automatically break your stagger and strike back. Unless you are playing on the easiest difficulty and want a self-imposed challenge, there is virtually no reason to use the Blood Strain over the far superior Chitin Strain for close-quarters combat.

The Acid Bombardier (Grenade Launcher + Corrosive Strain)

The Grenade Launcher has been a series staple, and in RE9 it returns with explosive, flame, and acid rounds. The Corrosive Strain synergizes with acid rounds, increasing their splash radius and slowly melting enemy armor over time.

The fatal flaw of this build is the opportunity cost. Grenade Launcher ammo cannot be crafted in bulk; it must be found or bought at exorbitant prices from the sparse merchant NPCs. Acid damage, while conceptually good against heavily armored enemies, is incredibly slow. You will often spend three or four precious acid rounds melting a enemy's armor, only for them to die in two shots from a handgun once the armor is gone. It is a highly inefficient use of rare resources, making it the weakest ranged build in the game.

How to Use This Tier List

Understanding the rankings above requires a bit of context regarding how Resident Evil Requiem handles progression and difficulty scaling. First and foremost, playstyle preference should always override tier placement. RE9 is a masterfully crafted survival horror experience, and forcing yourself to play the Neuro-Toxin Assassin if you hate precision aiming will only lead to frustration. The S and A tier builds are simply the paths of least resistance.

  • Difficulty Context: The gap between S Tier and C Tier narrows significantly on Standard and Assisted difficulties. If you are playing for the story, the Hemophage Brawler (C Tier) is entirely viable and incredibly fun. However, if you are tackling the "Abyss" difficulty or the post-game "Descendant" mode, you will absolutely need the damage mitigation of the Crimson Carapace or the burst damage of the Pyroclastic Demolisher to survive.
  • Patch Dynamics: As of the game's launch, the tier list is relatively stable, but Capcom has a history of adjusting survival horror balance. Recently, a minor patch slightly reduced the drop rate of SMG ammo, pushing the Shock Trooper closer to the lower end of A Tier, while slightly buffing the duration of the Shadow Strain's cloak. Always check the latest patch notes, as a simple 5% tweak to a Metamorphosis cooldown can shift a build's viability entirely.
  • Skill Tree Respec: Unlike some modern action games, RE9 allows you to respec your skill points at any time from the pause menu for a nominal fee of Lei (the in-game currency). Do not feel locked into one build. A highly effective strategy is to run the Ghost Protocol (A Tier) through exploration segments to stockpile ammo, and then respec into the Pyroclastic Demolisher (S Tier) right before a major boss room to dump all your saved magnum rounds into the boss's weak points.
  • Synergy Over Solo Stats: When building your character, look at the synergies. Do not just pick a weapon because it has high base damage. Look at how the weapon's inherent traits (like the Shotgun's stagger rate or the Handgun's crit rate) multiply when combined with a specific Metamorphosis strain. The builds in S and A tiers are ranked highly precisely because their two halves combine to create an effect greater than the sum of their parts.

Ultimately, Resident Evil Requiem is designed to be a tense, atmospheric journey through a living nightmare. Whether you are tearing enemies apart with the Crimson Carapace or meticulously picking off threats with the Neuro-Toxin Assassin, the best build is the one that keeps you immersed in the terrifying world of RE9 without breaking the pacing of your adventure.
