Atomfall is not your typical post-apocalyptic shooter. Developed by Rebellion, it plunges you into the fictional quarantine zone of Windscale, England, following a catastrophic nuclear event in 1962. It is a survival-action game heavily inspired by classic British role-playing games, blending first-person combat, deep exploration, and a rigid survival loop. There are no traditional quests marked with giant yellow exclamation points, no floating damage numbers, and no hand-holding. You are dropped into a harsh, bizarre world and expected to figure it out.

The absolute core of Atomfall can be distilled into three pillars: Explore everything, conserve your resources, and talk to everyone. The game does not level-scale to your progress. If you wander into the wrong bunker or aggro the wrong faction before you are properly equipped, you will die quickly. Information is your greatest weapon. Finding a note suggesting a hidden cache of bandages or overhearing a guard talking about a locked door is just as valuable as finding a new shotgun. Treat the quarantine zone as a puzzle box rather than an open-world checklist, and you will immediately find yourself having a better time.

First Hour Checklist

The opening moments of Atomfall are deliberately disorienting. You wake up in a precarious situation with limited gear and a whole lot of questions. To survive the learning curve, follow this priority checklist during your first sixty minutes.

Secure a Melee Weapon: Before you even think about engaging with firearms, find a blunt or bladed instrument. A cricket bat, a pipe, or a kitchen knife will be your best friend. Ammunition is incredibly scarce in the early game, and melee attacks do not consume resources. Rely on heavy, charged attacks to break enemy guards.
Scavenge for Basic Survival Supplies: You need food, water, and a way to heal. Loot every desk, bin, and locker you see. Look specifically for bandages, canned food, and bottles of water. Do not worry about organizing your inventory perfectly yet; just hoard whatever you can carry.
Establish a Safe House: Within the starting area, you will quickly stumble upon an abandoned shelter or a relatively secure building. Clear it out, loot it, and memorize its location. You need a reliable place to retreat to when your health is low or your inventory is full. Many safe houses also feature basic crafting benches.
Find Your First Crafting Bench: You cannot progress without crafting. Locate a workbench and familiarize yourself with the menu. Prioritize crafting additional bandages and basic lockpicks. Lockpicks are the key to early wealth and better gear, so never leave a bench without making at least two or three.
Initiate the First Faction Contact: You will encounter NPCs early on. Do not attack them. Listen to what they say, exhaust their dialogue trees, and agree to whatever basic task they offer. Even if you do not intend to side with them permanently, completing a minor task will usually yield a unique reward or a critical piece of lore that points you toward better loot.

Key Systems Explained

Combat and Stealth

Combat in Atomfall is methodical, weighty, and highly lethal. You are not a superhero; you are a survivor. Taking even two or three bullets from an assault rifle can end your run instantly. Because of this, stealth is not just an optional playstyle—it is a mandatory survival tactic. Crouch, use environmental cover, and observe enemy patrol routes before making a move.

When stealth fails, you must be tactical. The game uses a lite version of a body-part targeting system. Aiming for the head is an instant kill on unarmored human targets, but it is risky. If an enemy is wearing a helmet, aiming for the legs will cripple them, bringing them to the ground where you can safely execute a melee finisher. Always keep your distance from enemies wielding melee weapons, as their lunging attacks have deceptive range and can stagger you, breaking your block.

Firearms are loud. Firing a gunshot will alert every enemy in the immediate vicinity, and often enemies in adjacent rooms or outdoors. Use guns as a tool to thin the herd from a distance, then switch back to your melee weapon to clean up the remaining stragglers quietly.

The Economy and Bartering

There is no standard currency in the quarantine zone. You will not find piles of gold coins or pre-war bank notes. Instead, the economy operates entirely on a barter system. Different factions value different items. The military remnants might place a high value on pristine weapon parts and technical manuals, while the civilian survivors might trade generously for clean water, medicine, or luxury items like tea and cigarettes.

Before trading, always check what the vendor is selling. If they are selling a weapon you desperately need, look at their "wanted" list. Scavenge specifically for those items to maximize your trade efficiency. Never sell unique items or quest-specific documents, as you will not be able to buy them back. Common crafting materials like cloth, scrap metal, and adhesive are your best bet for general trading, as they are always in high demand.

Survival Mechanics

You have three main survival meters to monitor: Health, Hunger, and Thirst. Ignoring the latter two will slowly degrade your maximum health pool and eventually kill you. Food restores hunger but often provides minor healing, while clean water restores thirst. However, much of the water you find in the zone is irradiated.

Consuming irradiated items will increase your radiation meter. If your radiation gets too high, your max health is severely reduced, and you will periodically take damage. You must balance the immediate need for sustenance with the long-term danger of radiation sickness. Look for anti-rad medication, or invest in crafting water filters at a workbench to purify dirty water, making it safe to drink.

Progression and Skill Growth

Atomfall does not feature a traditional XP bar or a massive skill tree. You do not level up by killing enemies. Instead, progression is entirely action-based and gear-dependent. You get better at shooting by shooting; your recoil gradually decreases and your reload speed increases the more you use a specific firearm type. You get better at lockpicking by successfully picking locks.

Your actual "level" is determined by the quality of your gear. A player in a hazmat suit carrying a modified shotgun is inherently higher level than a player in a trench coat with a rusty pistol. Therefore, your progression path is not about grinding enemy spawns, but about exploring deeper into the map to find higher-tier crafting schematics and rare weapon components.

Build / Character Choices

While Atomfall does not lock you into a specific class at the start of the game, the way you allocate your early resources effectively defines your build for the first several hours. Because respeccing is not an option, you need to be deliberate about how you play from the very beginning.

The Scavenger (Recommended for Beginners)

This is the most forgiving way to experience the game. Focus your early efforts on finding items that increase your carry capacity, such as backpacks and utility belts. Invest heavily in the crafting tree, specifically prioritizing lockpicking and melee weapon maintenance. A Scavenger avoids direct conflict, sneaks past high-level enemies, and relies on breaking into locked rooms to find high-tier gear without having to fight for it. This build scales smoothly because better loot directly translates to better survivability.

The Soldier

If you have experience with tactical shooters and want to engage with the combat immediately, this is your path. Prioritize finding body armor and helmets as soon as possible. Scavenge for weapon cleaning kits to keep your firearms in pristine condition, as degraded guns deal less damage and jam frequently. The Soldier build requires you to take risks early on to secure ammunition and gunpowder, but it pays off by allowing you to aggressively clear out enemy checkpoints, securing safe travel routes across the map.

The Diplomat

A less obvious but highly rewarding approach is to focus entirely on faction reputation. By avoiding stealing from specific groups, completing their minor tasks, and bringing them specific情报, you can gain access to their exclusive vendors and safe houses. A Diplomat relies on allies to do the heavy lifting. If you max out reputation with the local civilian resistance, for example, you will find that they will actually send patrols to help you during difficult encounters. This build requires patience and a lot of dialogue, but it makes the mid-to-late game significantly easier.

Pitfalls to Dodge

Ignoring the Holster Button: Keeping your weapon drawn at all times is a fatal mistake. NPCs interpret a drawn weapon as a threat. If you walk into a neutral camp with a gun in your hand, the guards will immediately open fire. Get into the habit of putting your weapon away the second a combat encounter ends.
Hording Junk "Just in Case": Inventory space is brutally limited. If you are carrying twenty pieces of scrap metal, you are suffocating your own progression. Scrap is heavy and common. Use it to craft what you need, sell the excess immediately, and leave the rest on the ground. Only carry what you need for your immediate goal.
Sleeping in Unsafe Locations: Using a bedroll to pass time and restore health is a great mechanic, but doing it in an unsecured area is asking for an ambush. If you sleep in a room with an unlocked door or in the wilderness, there is a high chance you will wake up surrounded by enemies, or you will be killed in your sleep and lose your gear. Only sleep in cleared safe houses.
Engaging in Open-Field Firefights: The enemies in Atomfall have excellent aim and will flank you relentlessly. If you get caught in the open, do not stand still and trade shots. Sprint to the nearest cover, break line of sight, and force the enemies to come to you. Use bottlenecks like doorways to your advantage.
Selling Unique Items to the Wrong Vendor: Some vendors offer quests that require specific, one-of-a-kind items. If you sell a weird-looking prototype or a specific classified document to a random trader just to clear inventory space, you might permanently lock yourself out of a major storyline or a unique weapon upgrade. If an item has a unique name and a distinct icon, hold onto it until you are absolutely sure it is useless.
Rushing the Main Critical Path: The game naturally guides you toward the epicenter of the disaster, but the enemies there are designed for players who have fully explored the surrounding areas. If you hit a wall where enemies are soaking up entire magazines of ammo, stop pushing forward. You are not under-leveled; you are under-geared. Go back, explore a new region, and come back when you have better equipment.

Once you have established a safe house, understand the basic survival loop, and successfully bartered with your first faction, you are ready to truly dive into the quarantine zone. The immediate next step is to start mapping the different distinct regions surrounding the Windscale facility. Each region is controlled by a different faction and features entirely unique environmental hazards, ranging from toxic gas leaks to heavily fortified military bunkers.

Begin actively hunting for crafting schematics. These are usually found in highly dangerous areas, locked behind difficult puzzles or heavy enemy presence, but they are the true key to progression. A schematic for a suppressor, for example, will completely change how you approach stealth encounters, while a schematic for advanced armor plating will let you survive hits that would previously be fatal.

Finally, start paying attention to the environmental storytelling. Atomfall does not spoon-feed its narrative. The story of what happened at Windscale—and the bizarre, unexplainable phenomena occurring within the quarantine zone—is told through fragmented audio logs, cryptic graffiti, and the erratic behavior of the survivors. Talk to the same NPCs multiple times as you progress through different areas. Their dialogue will update, offering new clues and revealing the deeper, unsettling truth about the zone. Take your time, stay vigilant, and remember that in Atomfall, curiosity is just as dangerous as the radiation, but it is also the only way to uncover the truth.
